10 Easy Ways to be Green

Happy Earth Day! Green living has been a rising trend in recent years and it’s no wonder why. Environmentally responsible habits preserve nature and are healthier for all of us; but being green doesn’t have to be hard work. There are lots of little habits that we can do every day that take next to effort.

  1. Turn the water off when you are brushing your teeth
  2. Leave cloth shopping bags in your car instead of using the disposable plastic bags from stores.
  3. Don’t throw away old clothes. Donate them to Goodwill or The Salvation Army. Someone somewhere will want them and this keeps trash out of landfills.
  4. Re-use resealable food containers. Jars of tomato sauce from the store can be reused to store leftovers or to bring lunch to school or work.
  5. Walk when you can. It will save gas and give you a workout.
  6. Watch the temperature in your house. When the heat or A/C is going, make sure all of the windows and doors are sealed completely. Air can escape under your door or through an open window. And keep the heat or A/C on only in the rooms where you will be spending time. If you spend eight hours at work, why not turn off the air?
  7. Turn things off. Turn everything off when you’re not using it. It’s easy to save energy if you keep your eyes open. Turn off the lights, the television, the coffee pot, or the extra heater when you’re not in the room.
  8. Let your clothes air dry. When you do laundry, you can either put many different loads in the dryer at the same time (the colors won’t run in there) or hang them out in the sun. This will save them time and give them a nice spring-y smell.
  9. Plant something. Plants gives you something nice to look at all year round and adds a little extra green to our world. Some of my favorite plants are herbs and vegetables…because you can eat them!
  10. Choose “green” products. These could be products made in an environmentally responsible way or from environmentally responsible materials or it could even be as simple as buying closer to home. The less energy spent to get a product to you, the more environmentally responsible it is.
